For decades, doctors and individuals have relied on mathematical formulas to determine "ideal weight." These calculations, such as the Devine, Robinson, and Miller equations, are built into medical calculators and health trackers worldwide. Relying solely on a single target weight from a scale can be highly misleading and physically unrealistic.
The Origin and Math of Ideal Weight Equations
Most modern ideal weight calculators use formulas developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Originally, these equations were designed by clinical researchers not for general health assessment, but to calculate appropriate drug dosages for medications like anesthetics.
- The Devine Formula (1974): Male = 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet | Female = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. This is the most widely used medical standard.
- The Robinson Formula (1983): Male = 52.0 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet | Female = 49.0 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet. Designed to be slightly more conservative than Devine.
- The Miller Formula (1983): Male = 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet | Female = 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet. Often yields slightly higher weight targets.
Why Scales Fail to Tell the Full Story
While these equations provide a quick mathematical baseline based on height, they have three major clinical limitations:
- Muscle vs. Fat Density: Muscle is roughly 18% denser than fat. A highly active person or athlete with high muscle mass will weigh more than these equations suggest, but they may be in excellent metabolic health.
- Bone and Joint Frame Size: The formulas assume an average frame size. Individuals with larger bone structures naturally carry more weight safely.
- Fat Distribution: A scale cannot tell where fat is stored. Visceral fat (stored around internal abdominal organs) carries high cardiovascular risks, while subcutaneous fat (stored under the skin) does not.
