Daffodils
Poetryby William WordsworthChapter Overview & Plot Summary
The speaker is walking alone, feeling lonely like a solitary cloud drifting over valleys and hills. Suddenly, he comes across a vast crowd of golden daffodils growing beside a lake under the shelter of trees.
The daffodils are fluttering and dancing merrily in the breeze, stretching in a continuous line along the bay like stars shining in the Milky Way. The speaker estimates there are ten thousand dancing flowers, outdoing the sparkling lake waves in their joy.
At the time, the poet did not fully appreciate the wealth this sight brought him. However, now, whenever he lies on his couch in a thoughtful or vacant mood, the memory of the daffodils flashes upon his inner mind, filling his heart with pleasure and causing it to dance along with the flowers.
