A Letter to God

Prose & Essaysby G.L. Fuentes

Chapter Overview & Plot Summary

Lencho is a dedicated farmer who lives with his family on the crest of a low hill. His cornfield is promising a great harvest, but it desperately needs rain. When a downpour begins, Lencho is initially overjoyed, calling the rain drops new coins. However, the rain quickly turns into a destructive hailstorm, completely wiping out his crops.

Faced with starvation, Lencho's singular hope lies in God. Having absolute, literal faith, he writes a letter addressed directly to God, explaining his situation and requesting 100 pesos to replant his fields and feed his family. He drops the letter in the town mailbox.

The postmaster finds the letter. Amazed by Lencho's faith, he decides to help. He collects money from his employees, friends, and contributes part of his own salary, gathering a total of 70 pesos. He puts it in an envelope signed 'God.' When Lencho receives the money, he is not surprised but becomes angry that 30 pesos are missing. Believing the post office staff stole it, he writes another letter to God requesting the rest, warning Him not to send it via the mail because the post office employees are a 'bunch of crooks.'
