The Statue of Liberty is a famous monument in New York. It was a gift from the people of France to the United States to celebrate friendship and freedom. Dedicated in 1886, the statue is made of copper sheets covering an iron framework. Over time, the copper rusted, turning the statue from a shiny brown color to its famous green shade. The statue shows a woman holding a torch and a tablet with the date of American independence. For millions of immigrants arriving by boat, the statue was a welcoming symbol of hope.
