Bicycles are a popular way to exercise, travel, and compete. The earliest bicycle was invented in Germany in 1817. However, it did not look like the bicycles we ride today. It was made entirely of wood and did not have pedals. To move forward, the rider had to push their feet against the ground. Later, in the 1860s, French inventors added pedals to the front wheel. In the 1880s, the first 'safety bicycle' was created. It had two wheels of the same size, a chain drive, and rubber tires, making it much safer and more comfortable to ride. Cycling quickly became a popular sport. Today, international races like the Tour de France attract top cyclists from all over the world, showing how far bicycle technology has evolved.
