Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the world, but its origins are surprisingly simple. The game was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor at a school in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was asked to create an indoor game to keep his students active during the cold New England winters. He wanted a game of skill rather than physical contact, which would reduce the risk of injuries.
To create the game, Naismith nailed two peach baskets to the gymnasium balcony railings, which happened to be ten feet high. He used a soccer ball and wrote thirteen basic rules. Every time a point was scored, the game had to be stopped so a janitor could climb a ladder to retrieve the ball from the peach basket. Over time, the game evolved. Metal hoops with net pockets replaced the peach baskets, and a hole was eventually cut in the bottom of the net so the ball could fall through naturally, allowing continuous play.
The soccer ball was replaced by a larger orange basketball, and new rules like dribbling were introduced. Today, basketball is a multi-billion dollar sport played professionally by athletes globally. Interestingly, the official height of the basketball hoop remains exactly ten feet, matching the height of Naismith's original peach baskets, showing how a simple winter exercise became a lasting global legacy.
