The wheel is one of the most important inventions in human history. It was invented about 5,500 years ago in Mesopotamia. Interestingly, the earliest wheels were not used for transportation. Instead, they were used by potters to shape clay pots. It took hundreds of years before people realized they could attach wheels to carts to move heavy loads. Once wheels were used for wagons and chariots, trade and travel became much faster. Over the centuries, the design changed from solid wooden discs to wheels with spokes, and eventually to rubber tires, shaping modern transport.
